Wednesday, September 5 welcome to English 3 / course criteria sheet

Welcome to English III

The English III  groups this year will be called the DOPPELGANGERS*

*A doppelganger is a non-biologically related look-alike or double of a living person.
“It’s like a Rubik’s Cube — you can get a lot of variation,” Sheehan said. However, “There’s sort of a numbers game to it.”
Though our features vary more than any other animal, our genes do not. In fact, we aren’t that genetically diverse. So eventually, the numbers would dictate that certain features resembling yours and will randomly combine.
Why doppelgangers? I would like you to think, that despite of uniqueness, we are all quite similar.

In class today: review of the criteria sheet, class organization (chrome books), explanation of the blog and and first vocabulary (class handout / copy below)  See below for a copy of the criteria sheet.
Coming up: criteria sheets are due on Thursday, September 13. These count as a homework grade of 100 points.  Any received after that day will receive 50 points (see course criteria sheet). First vocabulary quiz on Thursday, September 13.
The blog: on your criteria sheet you will see the blog address: Parkerenglish3.blogspot.com. This is where you will find everything we do in class. This includes copies of all assignments, any links and any discussion material we covered. You will receive one copy of a handout. Check the blog, if you need another. If you are absent, you can access this material from home. Please do not come in and ask me what you missed, as it is right here. Ask for a specific handout or clarification. If you are absent, and well enough to complete the work from home, it is not necessary to print out material. Simply send me the responses.

Very important: if you are participating in an arts or extracurricular function that is taking place on a day there is an assessment, you must make arrangements prior to the day. Otherwise, the highest grade you will receive is 50 points.

Communication is the foundation to our humanity.  The English Language Arts curriculum strives to make
all students successful by the practice of those reading, writing and oral skills that promote proficiency. Our
goal is their practical application to whatever further educational path the student chooses. This is
accomplished through the undertaking of close, attentive reading in complex works of literature and
non-fiction. Students will apply critical thinking and analytical skills through oral and written work.
These will be augmented by vocabulary and grammar work. Upon the successful completion of the course,
