If you have finished, there is a handout for our next step, which is creating a powerpoint. We will be working in class on this over the next two days; after this you will be sharing your material will the class. More information to follow.
Here is another copy of last Tuesday's handout on creating the annotated bibliography. Remember your note's sheet will be collected at the beginning of class tomorrow. There will be no addtional class time to work on the annotated bibliography.
Annotated Bibliography Final Project (writing grade)
Your preparation is to be turned in at the close of class on Monday, when you share your typed final annotated bibliography.
Directions: As we finish Death and The King’s Horseman by Wole Soyinka, we will extend our viewpoint to the culture of Nigeria. You will select a topic from the list given out on Monday (also on blog) that requires you to research about a certain aspect of Nigerian culture. You will need to find six sources concerning your topic and for each source write a minimum of five sentences. Please follow the step by step directions below to help you with the project.
What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is where you list all the sources that you would be using in your final research paper. You would create a bibliography and underneath each source is where you would summarize, evaluate and list the possible use of your source. This acts as a sort of outline for your research and would help you in the final stages of a research paper. This will allow you to practice necessary research skills and how to think critically about sources.
Step 1- have a topic
You will choose three topics from the list given to you. We will assign you a topic based on your choices. If you were not in class, we will pick for you. Once you have your topic, please write it on the line below. No one will have the same topic.
Research topic: _____________________________________________________
Step 2- Your theme/thesis
Thesis statement is the main argument of your essay. Even though you are not actually writing a paper, when researching you often have a thesis that you are trying to prove/support with evidence. The research you conduct and the sources you use are your evidence. On the lines below, please write your thesis statement. You can follow the thesis formula given below if you wish. (Note that you must spend time reading about your topic, in order to write a thesis statement.)
Thesis formula: By looking at (your research topic), one can see (your argument/point being made about your topic), which is important because (emphasize the argument you are making).
Thesis statement:___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Step 3- research
Once you have your topic it’s time to start researching. When finding sources make sure that you are using reliable sources. This means NO WIKIPEDIA! You must find six sources; each source must give you new information that you could use towards a final paper. This means you must find a wide range of information on your topic. Make sure that you are taking notes on each of your sources in order to finish the writing aspect of this project. Please fill out the sources’ organizer that was handed out as well. (Note that as you must a supplemental, not repetitive material, you will need to read more than six sources.)
Step 4-citation
After finding 6 sources with good quality information, you must start the citing process. You can use citation machine for this process. Copied and pasted below are pictures of how to use the website. The way to manual cite sources is also pasted below for you to see.
Author. "Title." Title of container (self contained if book), Other contributors (translators or editors), Version (edition), Number (vol. and/or no.), Publisher, Publication Date, Location (pages, paragraphs and/or URL, DOI or permalink). 2nd container’s title, Other contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location, Date of Access (if applicable).
The Purdue OWL Family of Sites. The Writing Lab and OWL at Purdue and Purdue U, 2008, owl.english.purdue.edu/owl. Accessed 23 Apr. 2008.
AS well, you may go to citation machine. (You did this earlier in the year.) http://www.citationmachine.net/ (If you do not recall how to use this correctly, please ask for assistance.) Remember that your sources must be alphabetized.
Step 5-writing
When all your information is gathered and your sources are cited, it is time to begin the writing portion. Make sure the writing is double spaced. You will write a minimum of five sentences for each source. You must include a (1) summary of the source, (2) evaluate the source, and (3) finish by stating how you would use the source in your paper. Below is an example of how the finished product would look.
Make sure you notice and understand the different parts of what creates a bibliography.
Example: (below are pictures of the entire process step by step)
Step 1:
Research topic: Nigerian Literature
Step 2:
Thesis statement: By looking at (Nigerian literature), one can see (that colonization has effected the stories that have been written), which is important because (literature speaks to the experience and culture of different groups of people).
Step 3:
Pictures below are what some of your own research project should look like. Make sure you are picking good sources and explore and read the sources. Click on links within the articles and see where they take you.
After looking through a source and determining if you can use it, you will need to copy the link and create the citation as pictured above for you. It might help you to write down notes about what each source is saying in order to help you doing the writing part of the assignment.
Step 4:
Below is the citation of my source:
“Nigerian Literature.” Encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., www.britannica.com/art/Nigerian-literature.
Step 5:
Writing
“Chinua Achebe.” Poetry Foundation, Poetry Foundation, www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/chinua-achebe.
This source is a detailed look into the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe from the Poetry Foundation website. The site provides biographical information on the life and writing of the author Chinua Achebe. Chinua Achebe is one of the most influential and successful writers from Africa. This source provides an intimate look into what the inspiration behind Achebe’s writing is. Most of his stories are centered around Igbo civilization and telling the stories that center around colonization. This source provides a good wealth of detail in regard to the writer Chinua Achebe. This is a strong source when looking for biographical information. I will use this source as a way to connect my thesis to actual authors and their work. This information on Achebe allows for me to gain deeper connection toward my thesis. This information also gives me the titles of Achebe’s work that on deeper analysis fit into my argument. I can use this as a way to go forward in my research.
“Nigerian Literature.” Encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., www.britannica.com/art/Nigerian-literature.
This source is the online Britannica Encyclopedia and the site provides an overview of Nigerian literature. This source mentions certain performance groups that aided Nigerian’s literary scene. This group went by the name Mbari Mbayo Club which was a group of young writers that tried to renew the Nigerian literary movement. This site also provides names of famous writers that have come from Nigeria. This source works well as a good base for research. The website provides new terms and ideas that can be expanded on with further research. I would use this source in my paper as a way to introduce the idea of Nigerian literature and a guide to influential writers and literary movements within Nigeria.
**************************************************************************************
The above is one example. Again, you will have 6 different sources.
Summary: 1. Write your thesis. See the model above. After you have finished your research, you will revise this.
2. research your topic, using a minimum of 6 sources. It is likely you will need to look at more sources, as you must have new material.
3. Read your source material, seeking out specific information on your topic
4. . Using Purdue or Citation Machine, create your citation
5. For each source, write five well-written, grammatically correct sentences that summarize what you have read on your topic.
6. NOW: create your final document. Begin with an MLA heading
7. See exemplar below. Your final submission should look like this. Remember to alphabetize your sources.
Surname
Student Name
Instructor’s name

Your topic
(Below are the samples from step 5 above) You will have six of your own. However, they should look similar to these. Make sure you alphabetize your sources. Again, you need five sentences for each source.)
