Tuesday/ Wednesday February 5/ 6 Musee des Beaux Arts W. H. Auden

1773  Phillis Wheatley becomes the first African American to publish a book: Poems on Various Subjects.

 In class: take out your notebooks and on a new page, write out an mla heading.   The title is three type of irony. Copy out the following:


1.Verbal IronyThe use of words to mean something different than what they appear to mean.
2. Situational IronyThe difference between what is expected to happen and what actually happens.
3. Dramatic IronyWhen the audience is more aware of what is happening than a character.
Next...look closely at the image on the board.  After you have written out the three types of irony, list 5 things you see in the painting.

That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course

In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

1.   capacity (noun)- the maximum amount that something can contain or produce
2.   theoretical (adjective)- hypothetical, conjectural, based on or calculated through theory rather than experience or practice
3.   optimistic (adjective)- hopeful and confident about the future.
4.   pessimistic (adjective)- tending to see the worst aspect of things or believe that the worst will happen.
5.   malnourished (adjective)- suffering from malnutrition. Not receiving the proper nutrients to thrive
