Tuesday, February 26 The Gambler

Image result for welcome back

Housekeeping: everyone was given an extension on the writing component (counted as the last four questions) on the graphic organizer based up the New Yorker article "Our Shrinking Planet."  It is due NOW. The responses based upon having read the article, which incidently you had class time, are late. Please get these in. A BIG shoutout to the many who in the graphic organizer by the end of the day on Friday, February 15 and and even LOUDER shoutout to those who completed the writing component.  SPOT ON...WELL DONE!

Of note, I have finished all the notebooks with your brief response to your carbon footprint test. The link is on the blog from February 11/12, if you have yet to submit this.

Please be mindful that your are responsible for missed work. If you have a field trip, any previously assigned work is due on that day, otherwise it is late. If you have a vocabulary quiz scheduled, plan on taking it before the field trip. You do not get extended time to study. As always, when you are out, check the blog. More people are keeping up, by working on the material at home.  THANK YOU! That is a great way to prepare for college.

All grades are up to date.

Moving on.

Learning Targets: I can cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
I can determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text.
I can determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings

In class: WHAT IS AN EXTENDED METAPHOR?
What is an extended metaphor? The term extended metaphor refers to a comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph or lines in a poem. It is often comprised of more than one sentence and sometimes consists of a full paragraph. We also can call an extended metaphor an allegory. The extended metaphor- story, poem, picture or song can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically moral or political.

We are listening to the song "The Gambler"; you have a copy of the lyrics (handout below) and a lined sheet of paper. As we read and listen to the song,  be prepared to explain the extended metaphor behind the lyrics in a well-written paragraph.  This is independent work! If you do not finish, I will collect them at the beginning of class tomorrow. If you are on a field trip, they are due before you leave or the work is late and worth only 50 points.

Directions for your response: please respond to the following in a well-written paragraph of approximately 150 words. Blue or black pen only!

Begin with a MLA heading.

Read over the lyrics to The Gambler and explain the

extended metaphor. Use specific text from the song to

support your response within your sentences.

How should you start? Mmm..what is the purpose of the extended metaphor? Title of the song? Thesis sentence? Then how is this developed within the text?
