Thursday, October 25 - Background on Ethan Frome

Coming Up: Your Prologue sheets will be due on Friday, October 26th by the end of class. We will go over our new vocabulary for Ethan Frome tomorrow!

Objective: We will be able to identify and understand the main characters, setting, time periods in Ethan Frome. We will also start and read about the first half of the Prologue.

Learning Targets: We will be able to . . .

  1. Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama (e.g., where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed).
  2. Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text.
  3. Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 11–12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
  4. Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, assessing the stance, premises, links among ideas, word choice, points of emphasis, and tone used.
To Do List:

  1. Come in, sit down, and take out your naturalism graphic organizers. I will collect them at the beginning of class.
  2. We will review naturalism - think back to both our discussion of nature vs. nurture, as well as your naturalism graphic organizer. WHAT DOES OUR UNDERSTANDING OF NATURALISM TELL US ABOUT WHAT WE ARE GOING TO SEE IN THE PLOT?
  3. Who are the main characters of the "Eponymous" Ethan Frome:
    1. Narrator: An engineer who is working on a job at a powerhouse at Corbury Junction. He is in Starkfield for his work, and rents a room from Mrs. Ned Hale, who tells him about Ethan Frome, the mysterious man he hired to transport him to and from the train station. 1st person narrator - WHAT IMPACT DOES THIS HAVE?
    2. Ethan Frome: Protagonist, Farmer, his family lived and died on the same farm where he lives, once had hopes of leaving Starkfield to become an engineer, but never did.
    3. (Zenobia) Zeena Frome: Wife of Ethan Frome, Sick(ly), prematurely aged, unattractive, possible hypochondriac, nurse of Ethan's late mother.
    4. Mattie Silver: Zeena's cousin who comes to stay with the Fromes to help around the house, until she becomes the product of Ethan's affection. Described as young and lively.
  4. What is the setting of Ethan Frome:

IN YOUR NOTEBOOK TAKE 2 MINUTES TO WRITE DOWN THREE ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE THE SETTING OF STARKFIELD.

BASED ON THE ADJECTIVES WE SHARED, WHAT YOU KNOW, AND YOUR OWN ADJECTIVES, TAKE 2 MINUTES TO WRITE HOW YOU WOULD FEEL LIVING IN A TOWN WITH THIS DESCRIPTION? WHY?

HOW DO YOU THINK THESE CHARACTERS ARE INFLUENCED BY YOUR SETTING DURING LIFE IN THE LATE 1890S??? WHAT MOOD DOES THIS SET UP???

5. Take the remainder of class to read with your partner. Switch off every 2 or so paragraphs, and try to answer as many questions as possible. Read up to the paragraph that starts with: "Ruth Varnum was . . ." We will have the class tomorrow to finish the prologue.
